Whilst often overlooked by house hunters, Staines-upon-Thames is one of the most charming and liveliest of towns across the Surrey region. As local estate agents in the area, we certainly think the area deserves more recognition! Plus, whilst we’ve operated in the town for years, we’ve just opened a new dedicated branch for our clients.
Sat on the banks of the Thames and just a short 15-mile hop from the capital’s centre, there are several reasons as to why you might choose to move to the area. The Seymours team are shedding a little more light on to why it’s a top choice for those looking to move house in 2021.
1. Transportation links
Just 35 minutes from London by train, the town’s close proximity to the capital originally attracted the Roman inhabitants to this area. Fast forward, it’s now a popular choice for commuters who can enjoy the slower-paced lifestyle of Surrey town whilst still avoiding endless hours on busy trains.
You can also reach Reading in under an hour or Windsor is just fifteen! Spend your weekends exploring the stunning South-East, returning home after a long day enjoying some of the many tourist attractions.
Staines is also the closest town to Heathrow Airport so acts as the perfect launchpad for keen jet-setters. Long weekend away anyone?
2. Riverside views
Surrey is renowned for its wide range of scenic routes, taking you across hills and along the curving canals – Staines is no exception. There are some wonderful walks along the Thames in the town.
Our top pick? Try the quiet, secluded Penton Hook Island walk. Discover this hidden wooded island away on the river, with a selection of different routes to explore. Ideal for runners and dog-walkers, you certainly won’t get bored of the walks around the area as you can watch the changing of the seasons along the riverside.
3. Attractions for all
Staines has a wonderful choice of family attractions and beauty spots made all the more stunning during the Summer months. A few of the top attractions include:
- Thorpe Park: A great day out that is sure to be anything but the norm! Get your heart racing on one of the 50 thrilling rides in the theme park.
- Staines Market: Have a few hours to kill? Spend a few browsing the diverse range of stalls at the market; whatever you are looking for, you are sure to find it here.
- The Swan pub: Considered the best pub in Staines on a warm, summer’s day. This pub sits on the banks of the river and has a beautiful patio, ideal for topping up your tan. It even has its own private mooring should you decide to hire a boat for the day.
Of course, this barely scratches the surface on everything Staines has to offer in terms of attractions but it’s a fantastic way to begin exploring the area.
4. Rich in history
Staines was first built by the Romans and was originally named ‘Ad Pontes’ translated to ‘(at) the Bridge’ – a brief wander through the town today and you can see why! However, originally this was a reference to only the second bridge on the River Thames at the time, other than London Bridge.
In medieval times, having been more or less abandoned in the Saxon period, Staines became a thriving market town. Today, you can visit the market which still takes place on the High Street and dates back to 1218!
This rich history only adds to the charm of the town and with the addition of modern, world-class infrastructure, it’s the ideal place to call home.
5. Property prices
The average price of a property in Staines is around the £450,000 mark, but with a range of property types available, you can find your dream home whatever your budget. Whether it’s a semi-detached, flat or 6-bedroom house, there really is something for everyone in the area. It’s also a fantastic town for investment as sale prices are up by 22% in the last five years so, buying now could see your homes sell for considerably more in the future.
Property is in high demand in the area and whilst rising, Staines offers a vibrant lifestyle without the London price tag. Therefore, it is certainly a town to extend your house search in the South East to.
